We loved getting to know our new responsibility.
Much of our summer was spent using the SmartBoard to show what we know. Everyday we sang and learned about seasons, months, days of the week, and the calendar. Each student participated in SmartBoard activities to sequence and match seasons, months, and days. We practiced saying and writing each date and completed a daily worksheet. We also learned to identify and/or communicate our names, addresses, and phone numbers. We explored new TouchMath materials and practiced placing the touch points, sequencing numbers, and performing addition with TouchPoints. Cam improved his ability to complete longer stretches of work including handwriting. He traced labels that were placed around the room to practice reading common words (clock, door). Bryan practiced reading and matching 30 "Survival Words" such as 'bathroom' and 'exit.' Emily wrote sentences for 1/2 of the first 200 Fry Words. That's 100 sentences containing the most commonly used words! She also practiced her automaticity in reading the Fundations Trick Words for First Grade. Emily wrote books about many of the things she learned including animals, weather, time, and money. She used her resources- including Fundations Alphabet Linking Charts and Consonant Cluster Charts- to read books in the classroom (levels C-E), and continue the LLI program (through level 68).

We focus on individual needs using a teamwork approach. Students and teachers learn from each other. We develop more effective communication techniques- often through the use of technology and/or symbols. We share our learning and our achievements with the rest of the school. Through weekly field trips we practice skills we need to function in our community.
